London Uber Driver Allegedly Boots Gay Friends for Kissing, Calls Police
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Two gay friends in London said an Uber driver kicked them out of his car and called police after the men shared a kiss in the backseat of the taxi, the Metro reports.
Boyfriends Sam Simons and Santiago Figeuroa said their driver flipped out after they gave each other a quick "peck on the lips" when they were in an Uber car in London. The men said they were looking at pictures on their cell phone when Figeuroa nuzzled up to Simons and gave him a kiss. They said the driver shouted "man should not kiss man" before stopping his car just 1.14 miles into the ride and ordering the men out of the vehicle.
When the couple refused to get out, they said he called police.
"He just kept yelling at us and ordered us to sit on opposite sides of the back seat," Simons, 36, told the Metro. "It was not like we were ripping each other's clothes off we literally just gave each other a peck on the lips."
When police arrived, the men watched the driver yell and point at them while making kissing noises, they said. They eventually called a new taxi and went on their way.
"Santiago was really upset but I have snapped him out of it now," Simons told the Metro. "I have never come across this before in London but Santiago says he has. The driver said we were distracting him but it was not like we were all over each other. It was a peck- we could have been brothers for all he knew."
A spokesman for Uber commented on the incident and said the car-sharing company does not "tolerate any form of discrimination whatsoever."
"We have been in contact with this rider to offer our support," the spokesman added. "Uber prides itself on providing the highest quality, safest and most convenient service, so we take any incident where we fall short very seriously. In any incident, such as this, we suspend the driver in question while we investigate."
