Entourage - The Movie
Karin McKie READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The douchebag dudes, the posse for pussy, are back in "Entourage The Movie." Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) returns from retirement in Italy to produce Vincent Chase's (Adrian Grenier) directorial debut "Hyde," for which they must "kowtow to cow-tippers" in Amarillo, Texas, to secure over-budget funding.
Vinnie's gotten divorced after a nine-day marriage. Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) has lost weight and "looks like Karen Fucking Carpenter," while Eric (Kevin Connolly) continues to bang broads while waiting for Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) to give birth to their kid. Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) remains desperate and horny: "I may have to jerk it before I even get there," he opens the movie, riding on a speedboat heading to a yacht dotted with topless women in Ibiza.
Quite a few cameos are appropriately self-mocking, including appearances by Mark Cuban, Gary Busey, Bob Saget, Jon Favreau, Liam Neeson, Judy Greer, David Spade, Jessica Alba, Kelsey Grammer, Armie Hammer, George Takei, Greg Louganis, Vivienne Westwood-behatted Pharrell, and real-life executive producer Mark Wahlberg, on whose life the series and film are based, states the Blu-ray extra "The Gang - Still Rockin' It."
Writer/producer/director Doug Ellin adds that the TV pilot, written in 2001, had the goal to make these lives "real, not funny," and that they shot scenes guerilla, "like a student film."
The creative team employed numerous one-take, "walk and talk" scenes, many live, like at the Cannes Film Festival. They decided not to make a 9th season, but a film instead since their TV shoots "felt like a film from day one" (the actual film was shot in 36 days).
Ellin and the actors talk about "raising the stakes" in the feature "Hollywood, Baby!" - using bigger yachts, planes, watches ("all the toys for rich children") to show their larger fame and fortune, including the prototype concept car, the Cadillac Ciel, of which only one exists in the world.
"The Making of 'Hyde'" is the faux documentary where Vinnie talks about reimaging Hyde (of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr...") as a DJ and "a man struggling with addiction," at an underground rave of "S&M Goths with shiny skin."
The final two featurettes focus on Ellin's real son, who plays Gold's son. "Lucas Ellin is Jonah Gold" shows him on a red carpet, stating "I started at age six; now I'm twelve."
"Meet the Newest Member of 'Entourage'" prompts the shy and squirmy young man into a number of loaded answers, including about being in the film.
"It's fun," he says.
