Love or Whatever

Dale Reynolds READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Definitely for the under-30 crowd, this sweet, funny and undemanding comedy, "Love Or Whatever", about a just-turning-thirty gay psychologist, Corey (Tyler Poelle), who is ready to pop the marriage-question (accompanied by two gorgeous matching rings) to his hunky boyfriend, Jon (David Wilson Page) but finds out soon enough that said love-interest needs to explore his heterosexual side, with sexpot Melissa (Jenica Bergere).

Corey, cruelly dumped, finds another highly-attractive fellow, Pete (Joel Rush), an intelligent pizza-delivery guy. Corey is taken out of his misery for awhile until Jon returns begging Corey to have him back. So, what is an average-looking, personable guy to do???

Ah, but he has a high-energy and funny blonde lesbian sister, Kelsey (Jennifer Elise Cox), who keeps his spirits up, while Corey, in turn, works to keep her literary coffee-shop open. And veteran actor Faye DeWitt (then 78) makes her hot-mama cameo funny because her horniness is delivered with dignity.

Directed adroitly by Goodman, but with minimum wit, this middle-of-the-road film is light (screenplay by Dennis Bush and Cait Brennan), amusing, with well-handled male nudity (but, oddly, no female nudity - and this from a lesbian director). Still, Rosser Goodman knows her cinematic style and the film looks good, is well-acted, and is easy on the eyes and mind, so it's worth a gander or two. What's of interest is that it took two years to find distribution and then another year for DVD/Blu-ray distribution. Wonder why.

That the bonus package exists is worthy enough of comment, but it's also fun and full of actor-personality. Which actors are gay or not goes unspoken, but you have to credit any actor who is willing to take career risks by appearing in such a film. Standouts are Poelle, Bergere, Page, Cox and Rush, as is the work of cinematographer Alec Boehm and editor Donna Mathewson.
