Magic Mike XXL
Frank J. Avella READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Ladies and gay men, "Magic Mike XXL" is now available on Blu-ray, Digital HD and DVD! That's right, the delicious Channing Tatum is back with hotties Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez and Gabriel Iglesias. And Stephen "tWitch" Boss is also on board this time. Everyone gets a chance to strut his stuff and sparkle, but this sequel belongs to Tatum.
Director Gregory Jacobs and screenwriter Reid Carolin have fashioned an entertaining road movie meets '80s-style musical genre-mosh-up, and fans of the original should be pleased. The film is decidedly more sanitized for mainstream audiences with less nudity and drug use, and fewer strip numbers (though the boys are absurdly toned).
The simplistic plot reunites the Kings of Tampa for one last hurrah at a stripper convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mike is now toiling at his own furniture-manufacturing company, and one of the first scenes involves his performing an impromptu welding dance that pays tribute to the 1983 mess "Flashdance." It's just the right mix of sexy and odd.
The first stop along the road trip, Mad Mary's, is a drag bar in Jacksonville, Florida hosted by Miss Tory Snatch, and gives our ripped guys the first opportunity to teasingly strut their stuff and give LGBTQ viewers the warm fuzzies.
A decision is made to work on some new material, giving Joe Manganiello the opportunity to steal his moment with a routine at a convenience store that sets the sexy bar pretty high.
Another stop at a more upscale club in Savannah, Georgia, introduces audiences to Rome (diva sensation Jada Pinkett Smith), an old flame of Mike's who may agree to help the boys out of a pickle. But who is really watching for plot? Bring on the strip numbers!
Tatum dominates "XXL" and truly delivers outstanding work. And I am not just talking about his stripping techniques (although give the man props for being able to keep up with the outrageously limber tWitch!)
Manganiello and Bomer have way more to do in "MMXXL." Bomer plays his Zen character to hilarious effect and shows off a sweet singing voice, not to mention other lovely assets.
"Magic Mike XXL" is to be applauded for its refreshing diversity casting (basically, it's great to see black actors rock their parts... and their parts) and for setting aside typical male-movie machismo and brawn for fun, whimsy and a little somethin'-somethin'.
It's all about seduction, and the boys charm the women onscreen and the viewers off-screen.
The Blu-ray visual transfer is impressive, with the sun-drenched exteriors popping and the claustrophobic dance club interiors dripping in reds, pinks and purples. The audio is perfectly pulsating.
The Special Features are virtually nil, with two featurettes totaling a whopping 10 minutes, including "The Moves of Magic Mike," which has Tatum, Bomer and Manganiello talking dance. And there is an extended Malik (tWitch) Dance Number. That's it! Shame WB couldn't give the many MM fans out there some more nibbles.
