READ TIME: 1 MIN.

As "Back to the Future" Day (October 21) draws closer, the coolest device from the 1989 sequel is quickly becoming a reality. A Canadian inventor has successfully tested a new prototype for a hoverboard, CBC reports.

Inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru of Montreal had previously broken the world record for longest hoverboard flight in May when he flew over 16 feet high at a distance of 905 feet for over 1 1/2 minutes.

Duru told CBC that he is currently working on a secret next generation version on his record-breaking device using funds he invested in his company Omni Hoverboards, Inc.

"I saw how technology was moving and said 'this is possible," Duru told CBC's Reg Sherren.
