The Brain That Wouldn't Die
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
A movie that's perfect for poking fun at just happens to appear on the classic bad film riff "Mystery Science Theater 3000" show.
"The Brain That Wouldn't Die" has one of the most peculiar and offbeat setups in low-budget horror film history. Of course, that makes it perfect fodder for Shout Factory to add it to its retro catalog.
Dr. Bill (Herb Evers) accidentally decapitates his lover Jan (Virginia Leith) and tries desperately to resuscitate her. Instead, he keeps her head alive and searches high and low for a live body replacement. Bill scours strip joints and whorehouses for the perfect woman. Meanwhile, Jan in the Pan (as she's cheekily referred to by cult fans of the film) plots her revenge against Bill for keeping her head alive.
That afore-mentioned MST3K episode appears on Scream Factory's Blu-ray as a special feature, highly recommended to view instead of the actual movie. "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" segment was the debut of host Mike on MST3K, who took the reins over from Joel. This particular show aired in 1993 and was available as a separate DVD purchase. Scream Factory wisely includes it here.
Scream's high-definition transfer of "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" is the long sought after uncut version, featuring scads of scantily clad women and an extended brain surgery scene.
Also on board in the extras department are an alternate scene culled from the International Cut of the film, a still gallery, and an audio commentary with film historians and authors Steve Haberman and Tony Sasso. The commentary fuels the fact that "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" is a must-have for a bad movie night.
