The Green Inferno - Director's Cut

Eli Roth happily returns to his bloody horror movie roots with Universal's newest Blu-ray title.

"The Green Inferno - The Director's Cut" sounds like it could be a typical superhero movie. Far from it. Roth's ode to the green scenery of the Amazon jungle harkens back to his "Cabin Fever" and "Hostel" days...get ready for a bloodbath!

Activist students at a local NY college will never be the same after agreeing to visit and rescue inhabitants of a small Amazon village that's about to be destroyed by a money-starved conglomerate. After their plane crashes in the Peruvian jungle (in one of the movie's many well-filmed scenes), the group comes to realize they are being stalked by a tribe of cannibals.

Roth's trademark zany sense of humor gets sprinkled throughout "The Green Inferno," including one scene where the character of Alejandro after being captured with his friends by the tribe, inexplicably masturbates in front of everyone to, in his words, "relieve stress."

Mr. Roth also lushly photographs his film and the green referred to in the title comes to life in high-definition.

Thankfully, "The Green Inferno" is highly enjoyable. On the flip side, bonus features are sorely lacking. Only an audio commentary complements the Blu-ray from Universal. It's a sprightly one and features Eli Roth, producer Nicolas Lopez, and actors Lorenza Izzo, Aaron Burns, Kirby Bliss Blanton, and Daryl Sabara. The group share on-set anecdotes and the camaraderie they experienced. Naturally, Roth does most of the talking (it's his movie after all).

But where's the behind-the-scenes footage? Deleted scenes? Gag reel? Universal, take heed that your horror fans want more than just a good feature film along with a scant special features department.
