Crimson Peak

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Why didn't "Crimson Peak" do better at the box office? Perhaps this lush, beautifully shot feature film was too boring for the young audiences of today. If you haven't seen this glorious fairy tale/horror/fantasy story, go out and get this Blu-ray and shut yourself away from the world for two hours.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro ("The Strain," "Pan's Labyrinth") does so many things right in "Crimson Peak," and casts the perfect actors in his gothic horror film. The story about a young woman who gets whisked away to the fictional Allerdale Hall (and the secrets that go on behind closed doors) looks absolutely stunning on Blu-ray; it's one of the best high-definition transfers this reviewer has ever seen.

And thankfully, Universal does a great job at including a huge collection of bonus extras:

"I Remember Crimson Peak" - interviews with del Toro and his cast Mia Wasikiwska, Tom Hiddleston, and Jessica Chastain

"A Living Thing" - examines the transformation of the large soundstage that became Allerdale Hall/Crimson Peak

"A Primer on Gothic Romance" - del Toro talks about his love for gothic horror films, especially ones with a romantic edge to them

"Crimson Phantoms" - a look at the make-up effects in the film

"Hand Tailored Gothic" - the wardrobe of the film are discussed

"The Light and Dark of Crimson Peak" - a behind-the-scenes look at the film featuring production phases

"Beware of Crimson Peak" - actor Tom Hiddleston walks through the set of Allerdale Hall

Also on the Blu-ray are scads of deleted scenes and an audio commentary with the master himself, Guillermo del Toro.
