Secret Admirer
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 1 MIN.
An attempt at a John Hughes-esque style comedy with a bit of the "Porky's" naughtiness thrown in, the underrated '80s classic "Secret Admirer" gets a lovely Blu-ray transfer thanks to Olive Films. A comedy about a handwritten note that accidentally gets into many wrong hands causing a chain of misunderstandings, the comedy is smarter than your average teen film and does something many of the films of the same genre didn't do at the time: give the parents actual plots to deal with. Usually the focus is squarely on the kids and while Michael (C.Thomas Howell), his brother Jeff (the late Corey Haim), Deborah (Kelly Preston), and Toni (Lori Loughlin) are all front and center, parents and teachers get their day in the sun here too.
While the plot is now cutely antiquated (writing notes is like sending smoke signals), it's a fairly smart and entertaining comedy that fits in nicely with the teen comedies of the '80s generation. While the only special feature is the Theatrical Trailer, for fans of films like "Sixteen Candles," "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Ferris Bueller," this is a welcome addition to your collection.
