Millenium / R.O.T.O.R. Double Feature

Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.

I once thought I was the expert on most science-fiction films, that is, until the release of Shout Factory's latest double-feature sci-fi bonanza.

Obviously I was deep into my college studies when both "Millennium/R.O.T.O.R." roared into theaters like a lion in the late 1980's. But they whimpered out into oblivion not soon after and here they are resurrected for their Blu-ray debuts for cultists.

I'm now a fan of "R.O.T.O.R." (also known as "Blue Steel"), which is a complete rip-off of both "Terminator" and "Robocop." At least the film knows that it's stealing ideas from other films and features quotes such as "I feel like I'm in a bad sci-fi film," among others. This incomprehensible movie would feel right at home on any "Mystery Science Theater 3000" episode, as a corrupt sergeant (Michael Hunter) activates a prototype robotic cop. The non-human police officer wrecks murderous havoc seen much better in 1987's "Robocop."

Wooden dialogue and acting make "R.O.T.O.R." (which stands for Robotic Officer Tactical Operation Research) a classic in the bad movie genre.

A time travel film to rival "Back to the Future" comes in the form of "Millennium," a Cheryl Ladd ("Charlie's Angels") feature film where she plays dual roles. After a plane crashes, it's soon discovered that the passengers are from another time and place. And speaking of which, this film was released in 1989 and features Ladd looking very Lady GaGa-like. "Millennium" proves once and for all that what's old is new again...the Blu-ray transfer makes this science-fiction concoction look like a 2016 film.

Both Scream Factory titles come with theatrical trailers, reversible cover art, and a hard-to-find alternate ending for "Millennium."
