ABOUT RIHANNA
Robyn Rihanna Fenty, now much better known by just her middle name, was born in Barbados in 1988. She was first introduced to a record producer, Evan Rogers, when she was just 15 years old. She sang for him and he was so impressed that he insisted she record a demo tape. After inking her first record deal with Syndicated Rhythm Productions, Jay-Z and L.A. Reid took notice of Rihanna and offered her a six-album record deal with Def Jam Recordings. She made the big move from Barbados to New York City and began work on her first album.
She released her first single, "Pon de Replay," in May 2005. It reached #2 on the Billboard pop charts and became a #1 dance club hit. Her first album, Music of the Sun, was released in August 2005 and was very well-received, selling two million copies worldwide. Her move from teen pop star to sex symbol was cemented with her second album release, A Girl Like Me, which saw worldwide release in the spring of 2006. This album featured the #1 hit "SOS" and the worldwide hit "Unfaithful."
Good Girl Gone Bad was her next album release, in May 2007. The first single, "Umbrella," reached the top position in thirteen countries, including the United States, and sold over 6.6 million copies. Other popular singles from the album include "Shut Up and Drive" and "Don't Stop the Music." She won a Grammy Award with Jay-Z for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Umbrella" in 2008. The album's reissue in 2008 came with never-before-heard tracks such as "Disturbia" and "Take a Bow," both of which became chart hits. All in all, Good Girl Gone Bad sold over eight million copies worldwide.
November 2009 saw Rihanna release her fourth album, Rated R, which peaked at #2 on the Billboard albums chart. The most popular single, "Rude Boy," charted in the top ten in nearly two dozen countries, and topped the Billboard pop charts for six weeks. She would win two more Grammy Awards for her single "Run This Town."
Her duet with Eminem, "Love the Way You Lie," earned Rihanna her seventh #1 single on the U.S. charts, and in less than five short years, she became one of the top five female singers of all-time in terms of chart-topping hits. Not to be outdone, her next studio album, Loud, yielded three #1 hits in a row: "Only Girl (in the World," "What's My Name?" and "S&M."
The album Talk That Talk was released at the end of 2011. The single "We Found Love" topped the U.S. charts for ten weeks and became the longest-running #1 single of the year. "Where Have You Been," from the same album, reached the top five. Her twelfth #1 single was "Diamonds," the lead single from her 2012 album Unapologetic. "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko, charted in the top three.
Throughout 2015, Rihanna released three singles not tied to any of her past albums: "FourFiveSeconds" (featuring Kanye West and Paul McCartney), "B-tch Better Have My Money," and "American Oxygen." Her album Anti was released on Rihanna's preferred music streaming service Tidal on January 28, 2016. Her first single from this album is called "Work," and has so far peaked at #4 on the Billboard pop charts.
Rihanna has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, been awarded eight Grammys, 23 Billboard Music Awards, and was recognized as the top artist of the 2010s by Billboard Magazine, and was named one of the most powerful celebrities in the world by Forbes, and one of the most influential people in the world by Time.
