The Other Side Of The Door
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
What lies beyond "The Other Side of the Door"? Yet another tepid and redundant ghost story, that's what.
20th Century Fox's latest Blu-ray would've worked much better had it been a straight-forward drama about the loss of a child.
You might recognize the two stars of "The Other Side of the Door," Sarah Wayne Callies and Jeremy Sisto, from various other films and TV series. They play Maria and Michael, husband and wife, and as shown in various flashbacks, they've uprooted their lives to India.
In one of the most harrowing and saddest scenes to ever grace the movie screen, Maria and Michael lose their son to a tragic drowning accident. Maria cannot move past this awful event, and when given the chance to say goodbye to her son one final time, she jumps at the chance.
This involves a convoluted ritual where Maria unlocks the portal to hell and soon, she is stalked by demons and by her dead son.
It all sounds terribly frightening, right? "The Other Side of the Door" just can't get out of its own way and trudges along with several scenes of padding situations. Performances from the actors aren't the problem; the material just isn't strong enough and we've seen it all before in better movies.
Suffering the same fate are the special features on the Blu-ray. Six brief deleted scenes, a photo gallery, and the theatrical trailer don't add up to all that much. But the featurette "Behind the Door," basically a behind-the-scenes look at "The Other Side of the Door," isn't half bad. It doesn't make up for the fact that this supposed horror film is largely forgettable.
