Guy Smith Turns Fire Island Pines into a Double-Wide Disco with IndepenDance Trailer Trash

READ TIME: 4 MIN.

Break out your shortest Daisy Dukes, rip the sleeves off of your best bowling shirt and prepare to possibly hook up with one of your cousins. Red neck realness is about to invade Fire Island.

Call it either "Pabst Blue Ribbon in the Pines" or "Double-Wide Disco Fever," but the shore of the east coast's most exclusive gay enclave is about to go temporarily downmarket this Fourth of July Weekend with IndepenDance Trailer Trash.

"After years of celebrating everything from the glamour of old Hollywood to Mormon missionaries and the steamy Rome Spartacus, where do you go?" asks Guy Smith, whose production company is presenting the mega-house party along with Ty-Ho Productions and the Men of Reflections. For Smith and company, the answer was clearly "go low or go home" with a parody of the concept of class on an exclusive resort community that often takes itself a bit too seriously.

The theme of mobile homes is an apt metaphor for this year's event. After being held for over a decade at Reflections (aka the big white house on Bay Walk), only to make a brief stop in 2015 at the Share Gurl house, this year's edition of the party will be held at 145 Ocean Walk.

But don't be fooled by the dollar store-inspired theme. Smith and company promise that 2016's edition of IndepenDance will treat revelers to the same level of experience that has made this event a staple of the Pines' social calendar for 22 years.

Taking the tables once again will be DJ Tracy Young, who has been the party's resident DJ since 2007. Smith provides the dramatic light show after dark, as well as bone-rattling sound, with Robert Montenegro designing projections and visuals and Dobbins & Wright on decor.

The VIP guests will be treated to a private deck and bar overlooking the party and the ocean at sunset, while the masses will dance over the covered pool and everywhere else on the deck of the house. The bar is complimentary all night, as are Cin2 underwear and other giveaways hidden in the decorations of the party.

Smith also promises the requisite hoards of hot go-go boys gyrating in overalls (without undies) and cut-up Daisy Dukes. "It's going to be a hell of a ho-down," Smith says.

Tickets, are $85 for General Admission and $130 the VIP experience can be bought online at www.IndependanceFIP.org.

And while Smith laughs that "most queens would rather pay $85 or $130 to get out of a trailer park rather than enter one," the money is going to a good place.

As beneficiary of proceeds from the party, the Pines Care Center has been offering of a wide range of medical-related services to the residents and visitors of the Fire Island Pines and neighboring communities.

"In light of recent events, it has become even more obvious that a fully staffed and stocked professional health care center is critical to the needs of our community, now more than ever," Smith says. "In case of injury or disease, the nearest hospital is 90 minutes away from the Pines in the best of scenarios, and Pines Care Center is the best hope for the many residents and visitors on the island all summer." he concluded.

IndepenDance takes place on Sunday, July 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at 145 Ocean Walk in Fire Island Pines. For tickets and information on sponsorship packages, visit www.independancefip.org.
