Anything Goes. Ogunquit Playhouse
Kelly May READ TIME: 2 MIN.
It's delightful. It's delicious. It's de-lovely. It's "Anything Goes" playing at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. Starring Broadway's Andrea McArdle and Emmy Award winner Sally Struthers, this classic 1930s musical comedy tells a madcap story of romance aboard a transatlantic luxury liner. The musical includes some of composer/lyricist Cole Porter's greatest hits including "I Get a Kick Out of You," "You're the Top," and "Anything Goes."
This production benefits from a strong, dedicated cast, strong singing and expert choreography. Top-billed Andrea McArdle performed with a broken wrist, but she did not let this slow her down. McArdle uses her forceful belt and dancing skills to make her character, Reno Sweeney, engaging and a pleasure to watch. Ogunquit favorite Sally Struthers seems to enjoy every scene she is in and has the skill to get the audience laughing throughout.
A surprising treat is Ian Knauer's performance as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, especially his musical number, "The Gypsy in Me." With so many famous songs in "Anything Goes," this number could easily be forgotten. However, Knauer shows strong comedic timing and transforms the stuffy and odd lord into a lovable gentleman yearning for love. Also, Mychal Phillips as Erma brings some fun spicy naughtiness with her song "Buddie, Beware." The staging (direction by Jayme McDaniel, choreography by Jason Wise) and the Derek McLane's excellent set designs create a wonderful multi-tiered ocean liner on which the fun can transpire.
An additional element that made "Anything Goes" so entertaining is the theatre itself. Regional theatres are a mixed bag - some are well maintained and others are well-loved but worn down. Ogunquit Playhouse represents the former. The playhouse theatre, now in its 84th season, has an attractive stage and comfortable seating, creating wonderful ambiance for performances. Also, if you live in a city, you will be especially charmed by Intermission, where the theatre exit doors open up and audience members can enjoy Maine's summer evening and a glass of wine for a few minutes.
"Anything Goes" runs through July 9th at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, ME. To learn more, visit the Ogunquit Playhouse website.
