In Lieu of Tip, Man Writes 'Gay is Wrong,' Says Lesbian Waitress

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

A lesbian waitress who works at an IHOP in Enid, Okla. said a man she served Monday night wrote "gay is wrong" in lieu of a tip on his check, local news station WQAD-TV reports.

After working a double shift, Taylor Stewart, who works six days a week at the restaurant, said she was the server for a man and three children. She said she messed up an order but quickly corrected herself and apologized. Nevertheless, Stewart claims the customer was still rude to her.

"I'm a people person and that's why I have this job because I love people," Stewart told WQAD-TV. "You know, and I like to serve them and, you know, make them happy."

She said she apologized for the service but after finishing his meal, the man stormed out of the IHOP.

"I was like, 'Have a good night sir,' you know, 'Come back and see us,' and he didn't say anything," Stewart recalled.

When she went to clean the table, Stewart said she looked at the $36 bill and discovered there was no tip left for her. To make things worse, she said the man wrote a hateful message.

"When I went to pick up the check, I read it and I thought it said 'gray is wrong,' and I went and showed my girlfriend, and she was like 'what?'" Stewart told the news station. "And she said it said 'gay is wrong,' I was just shocked. I was more shocked than hurt, but I mean it did hurt."

Stewart said she's fine if people "don't agree" with homosexuality, but added those who disagree should "just let people be who they are and don't say hurtful things."

She told WQAD-TV she didn't recognize the customer nor did her coworkers.
