Back In Time
Kevin Taft READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Previously released on DVD and Blu-ray a year ago on the day that "Back to the Future" made headlines for it being the actual future date Marty McFly traveled to in "Part II" (and the films topped the charts for the day), the documentary "Back in Time" is being re-released, but this time only on DVD. (Although it's streaming on Netflix.)
A well-put together look back at the history and nostalgia of the films, the doc by director Jason Aron is a love letter to the beloved film trilogy and well as a time capsule of trivia and information. Including interviews with director Bob Zemekis, writer Bob Gale, executive producer Steven Spielberg, stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Claudia Wells, as well as rock star Huey Lewis, Don Fullilove ("maaaayor"), and composer Alan Silvestri this doc leaves no flux not capacitated!
When the filmmakers and actors speak, it's all about the love of the script and the challenge to get it made. But they all look back fondly and remember events like the premiere in London where Fox sat next to Princess Diana but had to go to the bathroom the entire time. For the super "in-the-know" there is even footage and stills from when actor Eric Stolz has been cast as Marty McFly and some discussion why it wasn't working out. (Nothing is said about Crispin Glover's absence from the second and third films as George McFly.)
But this doc goes beyond the "making of" aspect and into the fandom. There are people obsessed with recreating (or collecting) the time-traveling Delorean, a tribute band called The Flux Capacitors, Secret Cinema -- a community that puts on a live-action version of the film all through their town, as well as a couple who built an actual hoverboard.
But the fandom goes to not only every day people, but those in the industry who were inspired by the films like Adam F. Goldberg who's "The Goldbergs" sit-com on ABC often honors '80s classics in specific episodes -- including "Back to the Future."
What's great about this doc is that footage from the films, TV shows, music videos, behind-the-scenes footage and more was all accessible to the filmmakers so you truly get a well-rounded look at the history of the films and how they have stood the test of time. Definitely a must for "Back to the Future" fans and inspiring for those that want to create lasting stories that cross generations.
