I Me Mine: The Extended Edition
Bill Biss READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The book, "I Me Mine" was initially released in 1980. Now, "I Me Mine: The Extended Edition" is given the "royal treatment" from Genesis Publications in 2017. This is the definitive homage to singer/songwriter, musician, and spiritualist George Harrison. The Liverpool lad with a guitar whose fate and destiny led him to become one of the four men known worldwide as the Beatles.
A close friend and associate in Harrison's inner circle, Derek Taylor spent many a time on the road and all around with George Harrison during this great time of the Beatles' success. His skills as a writer and his friendship, admiration, and honesty of his relationship with Harrison resulted in a series of taped conversations between them. These conversations presented for "I Me Mine" are autobiographical and clearly a true record of Harrison's life, his reaction to fame, his ideology on religion in addition to the acceleration and disillusionment of celebrity. Taylor is truly able to capture the man behind the music in his own words and the conversations with George Harrison.
A true valentine of love is also provided by the love of Harrison's life for 27 years, Olivia Harrison... in an intimate introduction to the book which offers a touching look at her "musical man in the garden." Harrison's love of nature, the calm found for him in gardening is juxtaposed with the exhilaration of his passion for automobiles and race cars. Quite a contrast that seems fitting for a man who lived life in the "fast lane" for almost a decade, yet found his spring awakening as a solo artist.
After the priceless gems of observation are presented by Harrison over 75 pages, the reader can view a photo gallery of reflection of 52 images of George Harrison, the Beatles, his wife Olivia and even a candy box of Good News chocolates which was the inspiration behind his song "Savoy Truffle!" (There's a story that Harrison recollects about Eric Clapton that is too sweet to let out of the box, here.)
The proof is in the pudding, it's said. The bulk of "I Me Mine: The Extended Edition" is proof of that with 141 song lyrics, hand-written lyric sheets by Harrison and a personal preceding page on the majority of his songs. The preceding page before the presented lyrics offers his perspective and thoughts on how his songs came to be. This is the master set of countless creations that not only tell a story of this work but offer insights to his transition from the Beatles to a revolutionary artist of his own making. There is a majesty of music to be discovered that is as thoughtful, brave and as fascinating as the man, himself.
