Black Christmas

The holiday horror film that some claim to be the forerunner of future slashers comes out in a fantastic two-disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray. "Black Christmas" from 1974 has been released in many versions over the years, as recently as 2006 in a high-definition edition. Naturally, Shout Factory beat all the other entertainment companies to the punch and offers up a new 2K scan of "Black Christmas" and a slew of bonus material.

Shout's new restoration harkens back to how "Black Christmas" originally appeared in theaters back in the early '70s: A bit of grainy scenes here and there, precisely how this low-budget horror flick should look. Its simple story of a sorority house whose residents get stalked by a sadistic prank phone caller influenced both "Halloween (1978)" and "When a Stranger Calls" with its point-of-view camera shots and the urban legend of "the calls are coming from inside the house."

Bob Clark ("A Christmas Story," "Porky's") produced and directed "Black Christmas," his only foray into the horror genre. Carried over from prior releases is his audio commentary, done before his untimely and tragic death.

Other audio commentaries appear on disc one with many of the film's actors, most notably a fun and twisted one with the character of Billy (actor Nick Mancuso).

Disc two is where fans will find an overabundance of extras carried over from both previous DVD and Blu-ray releases, most featuring archived interviews with actors Olivia Hussey, Art Hindle, John Saxon, and Margot Kidder. All of them eventually went on to become horror genre icons.

Two brand new featurettes, "Film and Furs" and "Victims and Virgins," have interview segments with Art Hindle and actress Lynne Griffin, whose claim to fame is being the first plastic-bagged victims in "Black Christmas."
