Family Guy - Season 14

The primary extra in the three-disc, uncensored DVD set of "Family Guy Season Fourteen," is "The Art of 'Family Guy,'" a short featurette outlining the artistic choices of this 20-episode season.

One of the creatives says, "For almost 300 episodes now, it's daunting to go from words to a whole world." This season brought a lot of unique looks, especially in the episodes "Peternormal Activity" (a "scary/funny" feel, with more cinematic and sweeping shots, helmed by Joe Vaux, where the gang writes a horror movie while IN a horror movie), "A Lot Going On Upstairs" (Stewie's newfound nightmares, featuring a Glenn Close cameo) and "Candy Quahog Marshmallow!" (K-pop, also the DVD set cover with Peter naked on a white puffy treat, a la Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball").

Korean-American co-producer Peter Shin explains that one of their writers used to be on a Korean soap opera, becoming the inspiration for the well-researched episode, which includes voice work by Margaret Cho. The four fellas find and binge watch VHS tapes of "Winter Summer," Quagmire's long-forgotten soap (he was hired since he was taller than 5'4" although he didn't understand the Korean he memorized). They then fly to Seoul, the plastic surgery capital of the world, to find and watch the ending. Ashton Kutcher has a real-life appearance.

Another featurette, "Talking Animals Mashup," takes quick fauna clips from seasons 4-14, including Ricky Gervais's snarky dolphin and two drunken gulls thoughtfully observing, "Why are we the only animals whose poop is white?"

Other extras include audio commentaries, deleted scenes and a full episode animatic on "A Lot Going On Upstairs."

"Pilling Them Softly" drugs Stewie for his behavior issues while Quagmire hosts a cooking show. "Guy, Robot" admits "we act like we didn't take a lot from 'The Simpsons,' but we did."

"Road to India" doesn't feature Stewie and Brian's usual Hope and Crosby songs and dances, but Brian's search for a tech support woman named Padma, rim shots by Ganesha, a Bollywood ending, and a voice cameo by Somalian "Captain Phillips" actor Barkhad Abdi.

"Brokeback Swanson" has the foursome running in Quahog's answer to Pamplona, the Seriously Wicked Bull Run.

Each episode contains a least one solid joke, but seen in succession there's an unsavory sameness. Binge watching seems best for interlocked narrative series rather than one-offs.
