Scream Queens - The Complete First Season
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Yes folks, I am a Jamie Lee Curtis fanatic; so much so that when I heard she was starring in a TV spoof of the horror films that made her famous, I waited with baited breath for the Fox series to start. So why does "Scream Queens - The Complete First Season" disappoint on so many levels?
The Ryan Murphy series about a plethora of sorority sisters that get stalked by a red-masked devil killer should've been a well-written, well-acted show. Instead, viewers get subjected to lame jokes (Jamie Lee's character's name is Dean Munsch....groan!), unevenly convoluted plots that will make your head spin faster than Linda Blair, and one-dimensional characters which prove 1980's slasher victims had more depth.
"Scream Queens" does have its moments though. Jamie Lee Curtis is still the ultimate scream queen and does a fitting tribute to her mother, the late Janet Leigh, as she mimics the infamous "Psycho" shower scene brilliantly. And Niecy Nash as police officer Denise offers up one of the sassiest characters on TV.
The DVD set of season one finally arrives over a year after the series' debut. Complementing the 5-discs are three brief featurettes:
"Rush Kappa" has the young actresses of "Scream Queens" appearing in character and describing what it's like to be bitchy sorority gals at Kappa Kappa Tau.
"Between Two Queens" had such promise from the get-go, as it pairs up two actors from the show and has them interview each other. Then you'll realize the same questions are asked in each segment, miring down this uneven 10-minute special feature.
"Style Queens" wastes a minute and a half exploring the wardrobe choices for the actresses of "Scream Queens," focusing its brief attention on series star Emma Roberts.
Rumor has it that the sophomore season of "Scream Queens" that recently wrapped up is a vast improvement, set in a hospital. Until then, I will watch Jamie Lee in "Halloween II (1981)" instead.
