The Magnificent Seven

JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The spaghetti-western is alive and well! In this contemporary remake of the classic "The Magnificent Seven" an equally impressive cast of Hollywood's most impressive hired guns are brought together to raise some cane and spit tobacco! Heavyweight Denzel Washington is reunited with Ethan Hawke in this version directed by their "Training Day" director Antoine Fuqua, who has invited the cheerfully charismatic Chris Pratt into the fold.

The small town of Rose Creek is living in fear of a ruthless industrialist Bartholomew Bogue played by Peter Sarsgaard who doesn't know how desperate its citizens are that they've hired some outlaws of their own - seven to be exact - for the ultimate showdown with the prize far outweighing just their handsome bounty! This crew faces insurmountable odds to bring down Bogue and along the way inspire the townspeople to take up the defense of their homes.

The classic featured Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn and more, easily earning the title of one of the genre's most definitive films; an instant classic. This reinterpretation of that hit owes plenty to what came before, and effectively sets its own path engaging in relentless action leading to a climatic cinematic stand-off that could only be captured in today's cinema.

"The Magnificent Seven" is easily compelling and a worthwhile treat just to see how the chemistry works with its lustrous cast. Denzel Washington is unflappable; Ethan Hawke continues to deliver on his subtle star-quality and Chris Pratt doesn't steal every scene that he's in. If action is your thing, then settle in for a good bit of it; this is bloody exciting, until you get the gist of it, and realize that you might just have enjoyed watching the original instead.

Key action scenes are uniquely dissected by the movie's director and cast when viewing in the "bonus feature" Vengeance Mode available on the Blu-ray. You can also relish in some additional Deleted Scenes and a special look at the making of the film including "Directing the Seven" and "Magnificent Music" which looks at the legacy of film composer James Horner. "The Magnificent Seven" doesn't skimp on bonus features, It shoots straight if you like that sort of thing.
