The Accountant

In the thriller "The Accountant," star Ben Affleck plays the title character, who from all outward appearances is just a simple numbers-guy. Looks, however, can be very deceiving; as we learn early on, his role as a tax consultant is just a cover, and Affleck's character is harboring a dangerous secret, one that has haunted him since he was a child. When the Treasury Department sends an agent to investigate Christian Wolff (Affleck,) suddenly, they find themselves in the midst of a conspiracy with unimaginable consequence.

Wolff is hired to look into the accounts of a medical robotics company led by a tech guru played by John Lithgow. One of his finance clerks (Anna Kendrick) discoveries a discrepancy of millions of dollars, and once Wolff confirms her findings, they both find themselves targets of a strong-arm conglomerate that has been hired to take them out. Unfortunately for the assassins, the accountant, Christian Wolff, is more than just a whiz of a mathematician - he's also a crack marksman.

Now on the run, Wolff desperately works to protect the innocent clerk (Kendrick) and take down the team of assassins that have been hired to keep them both quiet. All the while the Treasury Department begins to zero in and the mystery of who really is Christian Wolff may be unraveled before the final act! "The Accountant" is a timely, modern-era caper and Affleck does an admirable job of embodying this contemporary hero, but the convoluted plot creates a distraction and works against the already overly complicated narrative, dulling the overall conclusion of the film.

The Blu-ray is loaded with special features, including an in-depth study of the "Behavioral Science" behind Affleck's character Christian Wolff, and how his particular condition plays an intricate part in the development of this new action hero. Also of considerable interest is a look at the film's action and highly choreographed stunt sequences, which details how weapons specialists helped heightened the film's realism and enhance Affleck's skill to make Christian Wolff a formidable adversary. The film features great additional performances from J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal, and Jeffrey Tambor.
