Evan Rachel Wood Wears Suit to Golden Globes, Says Dresses 'Aren't a Requirement'

The Golden Globes awards show is historically a forum for unveiling the highlights of fashion and couture, and last night's ceremony was no different. But for "Westworld" actress Evan Rachel Wood, her sartorial choice of a tailored pantsuit was a carefully calculated message to her female fans, to let them know that glamour and glitz doesn't always mean high heels and slits.

The actress told Ryan Seacrest on EOnline that she chose her custom suit by Altuzarra to let her female fans know that it was okay to dress a little differently, calling her tuxedo "an homage to Marlene Dietrich and 'Victor/Victoria,' and Dietrich and David Bowie because it's his birthday."

"This is my third nomination and I've been to the Golden Globes six times," she explained. "I've worn a dress every single time and I love dresses. I'm not trying to protest dresses, but I wanted to make sure young girls and women know that it's not a requirement."

Wood, who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama, also added, "You don't have to wear one if you don't want to. Just be yourself because you're worth more than that."

Allure remarked that Bowie is Wood's style icon, and noted that the actress wore her hair dyed gray in a simple waved side-part, with minimal makeup.

Today also noted that Wood wasn't the only woman wearing pants, as fellow nominee Octavia Spencer wore a sharp blue suit, and Kathryn Hahn wore a black tux.
