Citing Transphobia, 'Drag Race' Stars Slam VH1 for Hiring Wendy Williams as Preshow Host

"How you doin'?"
Not so good!
One of the biggest changes in "RuPaul's Drag Race" herstory came with its ninth season: The popular competition show left the LGBT network Logo for VH1. The move seems to be effective as the Season 9 premiere became the most-watched episode of "Drag Race" ever. But it's also coming with some controversies.
Some of the show's biggest stars are taking to social media this week to call out VH1 for tapping controversial talkshow host Wendy Williams to host "Fierce Fridays," a live "Drag Race" viewing party that airs on the network right before new episodes of the reality program. Now, some notable queens are taking issue with Williams' hiring, citing past remarks and actions from the host.
Season 5 and "All Stars 2" contestant Detox took to Instagram, posting a screen shot of a Facebook post from drag queen Stephanie Stone. Stone accused Williams of kicking Erick Atoure Aviance out of the audience for dressing in drag, Mic reports. The Advocate reported in 2010 producers told Aviance she was not allowed on camera and would not be allowed to ask Williams a question.
"All I remember is when Wendy William has Erick Atoure Aviance removed from her studio for being in drag," Stone reportedly wrote on Facebook. "Now she's doing the preshow for 'Drag Race.' When are folks going to realize not everyone's your 'friend of the community.'"
In her Instagram caption, Detox added:
"THIS IS IMPORTANT! This is why I say Wendy Williams should not be hosting the 'RuPaul's Drag Race' viewing party on VH1. She is NOT an ally. She is transphobic. If anything, she is an ENEMY. An enemy profiting off our community. Fuck. That. #ImpeachWendyWilliams and #FireWendyWilliams."
Mic points out "Drag Race" judge Michelle Visage responded to the post, simply commenting with "Yup."
Page Six notes the show's producers apologized for the incident.
Detox isn't the only "Drag Race" star to call out Williams. "All Stars 2" winner Alaska Thunderfuck spoke with Unicorn Booty, saying she had a problem with Williams hosting the preshow.
"Frankly, I think the decision to make Wendy Williams one of the hosts of the weekly spots framing commercial breaks for 'RuPaul's Drag Race''s weekly broadcast is tone deaf, untimely and incorrect," she said.
Alaska goes on to cite Williams' problematic language regarding Caitlyn Jenner.
"I used to watch Wendy's 'Hot Topics' daily, and some of the things she said during Caitlyn Jenner's very public transition were beyond questionable," the performer told Unicorn Booty.
She added:
"I certainly don't think she is the right person to be hosting our community's flagship television program. I think it's good for 'Drag Race' to be moving toward the mainstream. I'm grateful for the move to VH1. I'm glad that one million people watched the first episode of Season 9. Our message is one of love and acceptance and truth and strength and perseverance, and I believe it should reach everyone, near and far."
Williams nor RuPaul have commented about the "Drag Race" stars' statements.
