Kathy Griffin Recalls Talking Cher with Aaron Schock (at Windsor Palace, No Less)
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
Twitter is usually used to sending out brief, 140-character messages into the void. The social media platform is not the place to go to tell a long narrative, but Kathy Griffin upended expectations with a wild and riveting tale about former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock.
Griffin's story comes just a day after it was reported a staffer working for Schock secretly provided the feds with "a trove of emails, credit card receipts and other documents that violated the now-indicted congressman's constitutional right against unreasonable search and seizure," the Associated Press wrote. AP added:
It's unclear exactly how information from the staffer-turned-informant shaped prosecutors' corruption allegations against Schock, whose high-flying travel and curious office expenses made news two years ago and drew the attention of the Justice Department. Schock was indicted in 2016 after resigning from Congress the year before.
After Griffin learned of the latest development in the Schock case, the comedian took to Twitter to tell a mind-blowing story involving herself, the now-disgraced Congressmen, Joan Rivers (of course!) and Buckingham Palace.
With the help of writer Yashar Ali (New York Magazine, Mother Jones), Griffin explained the story that had Twitter followers freaking out. Ali started a Twitter thread Wednesday, after Griffin told her story on her own account, writing the comedian and called him to retell the "craziest story."
In their stories, Griffin explains she was invited to go to London with the late Joan Rivers in 2011 for an event at Windsor Castle. Rivers was friends with Prince Charles and Camilla and went to their wedding, Ali explains. At Windsor Castle, Griffin was seated at dinner "next to this gay couple. Both in tuxes. One is clean cut and the other is kind of greasy," Ali writes in the seventh part of the Twitter story.
"The clean cut guy is clearly a fan, chatting her up, asks her all about Cher - total gossip session. Fun," Ali writes. In his next tweet he writes: "Ok you all know who the clean cut gay guy is -- no suspense here...continuing...." and adds an image of Schock's Men's Health cover.
Ali adds Griffin "has no idea (keep in mind this is before he became gaymous) that the gay guy she's seated with is a Congressman."
"Finally she asks what do you do for a living? He says he's a Congressman from Peoria, IL -- Kathy is from Oak Park, IL (my hometown)," Ali writes. He goes on to write that the Congressman said he paid $25,000 to be at the dinner, which Griffin and Ali believe is a lie.
Ali next tweeted: "Meanwhile his partner boyfriend, whatever, is like really weird and clearly on something. Back to Aaron...... [Griffin] then says ok so obviously you're for repealing DOMA, same sex marriage etc. Remember she's assuming he's out."
Ali writes the Congressman got "all curt and is like 'uh no, I am not.'"
"Remember he's sitting there with his boyfriend talking about Cher etc. Gimme a break," Ali tweets.
Over on Griffin's Twitter, she writes: "I was surprised. I started asking him about the legalization of gay marriage and the repeal of DOMA.
"He was not in favor of legalizing gay marriage. He thought marriage should only be between a man & a woman," Griffin added. "I think I even jokingly called him, well 'a bad gay.' I know. I know."
Ali reminds his 61,600 followers: "Remember the scene: they're at Windsor Castle....she accuses him of being a bad gay!!!!"
"He gets super annoyed w/ her + doesn't say 'I'm not gay," Ali tweets. "It's more like he was offended by idea that anyone there thought he was gay."
Ali adds at the second night of Windsor event, the Congressman "totally ignores [Griffin], cold shoulder etc."
When Griffin was recounting the interaction on her Twitter, she wrote: "I could go on but what struck me is that at the end of the night he & his plus one asked Joan Rivers & I if we wanted to join them at a nightclub! Joan & I laughed about that offer for a while. Instead Joan & I went to visit a very ill...friend of hers in a hospital in London.
"Those boyz hit the nightclub that night, but Joan & I visited her boyz in our ballgowns in hospital," Griffin added.
On Ali's Twitter, the writer pointed out: "One of the things Aaron got charged with was accepting an illegal gift ie the Windsor Castle excursion but here's what we didn't know... Kathy Griffin was in the loop (unwittingly) years before the rest of us and the Feds. Which is peak Kathy Griffin.
"Kathy Griffin, Joan Rivers, Aaron Schock and Prince Charles walk into Windsor Castle...is the start of the gayest joke ever...," Ali wrote, and then teased his followers:
"END THREAD for now....more to come...."
