Three months after his sudden passing, friends and family have finally laid George Michael to rest.

The pop star's family said in a statement a "small, private ceremony" was held Wednesday, according to the BBC. Michael's family said it was attended by "family and close friends."

The Sun reports George was buried at Highgate Cemetery in North London. It is believed the singer was buried next to his mother.

The statement goes on to thank Michael's fans for "their many messages of love and support."

Fans who paid for a tour of the cemetery in hopes of getting a glimpse of Michael's final resting place were turned down, according to The Sun. A message on the cemetery's website reads: "George Michael's grave is in a private part of the cemetery which is not accessible to visitors."

"The gravestone was cleaned up recently and a new memorial with George's name will be added but you have to let the ground settle first," a source told the British tabloid.

Michael died on Christmas Day at the age of 53.
