Report: Out Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar to Direct Netflix Series

Prolific filmmaker Pedro Almodovar is reportedly set to direct a series for Netflix, according to IndieWire, which cites Spanish-language website Fotogramas.

This marks the out director's first foray into TV. Almodovar told Fotogramas, however, he's been approached by TV companies in the past to make something for the small screen.

Details about the project have yet been revealed.

The news comes as Almodovar presides over the jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Almodovar sparked a bit of controversy during the festival's opening press conference. Commenting on Netflix's presence at Cannes, many believed the director had negative feelings towards the streaming service. Netflix has two films (Noah Baumbach's "The Meyerowitz Stories" and Bong Joon Ho's "Okja") in competition for the festival's prestigious Palme d'Or award. But Almodovar's sentiments were lost in translation.

Almodovar, who gave his statement in Spanish that was translated to English, later cleared things up, telling IndieWire: "There's nothing worse than being misunderstood or poorly translated. Not me nor any member in the jury will make any distinction between the two Netflix films and the rest of the films in competition.

"We're here to judge artistically the 19 movies that the festival has selected. We have said so before, but I want it to be clear," he said.

Almodovar's latest film "Julieta" was released last year.
