Watch: Gay Couple Hosting New HGTV Show Asks for Support
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Having a gay couple host a house-flipping show on HGTV seems like a multi-million dollar idea.
The Home & Garden Television Network recently aired a pilot episode for a new show called "Down to the Studs," hosted by husband-and-husband duo PJ and Thomas McKay - who refer to themselves as "The Property Lovers."
"Based out of the booming real estate market of Chattanooga,...PJ and Thomas are using their design and renovation skills to improve their hometown, one flip at a time," HGTV writes. "Partnered with Thomas' sister, Sydney, and PJ's friend and neighbor, Tania, they've assembled a dynamic team that can bring beauty and value to even the most dilapidated homes."
The first episode aired last weekend as a trail run. It's unclear if the network will pick up the series but PJ and Thomas are asking fans and followers to use the hashtag #HGTVDowntotheSutds to show support.
Twitter users seem to be responding well to the prospect of having a same-sex couple host an HGTV show.
Earlier this week, local news station WDEF sat down with the couple where they explained their passion for home remodeling, why they love their home state of Tennessee, and the possibility of having their own show.
"Showing America that you know what the city has to offer and the type of homes that are in this area," Thomas, an interior designer, told the news station. "It, you know, it's something that we feel very strongly about and we're honestly just humble to have this opportunity."
"The show is about Thomas and Sydney's childhood home. We buy the house and we renovate it and when we get the house it's in really bad shape," PJ, a real estate agent, added. "So we get in there and take it down to the studs in every single room, and we bring it back to its former glory."
PJ went on to say: "The four of us actually had a production company contact us because of a social media account that Thomas and I started. The account at the time was called The Property Lovers, and we had a pretty big following on that so it kind of just developed from that."
