The Strain - Season 3
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The number of episodes may have lessened in "The Strain - The Complete Third Season" but they still pack a wallop. While not as horrific or intriguing as the previous two seasons, the FX series takes the trilogy of novels by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan and expands on them in imaginative ways.
When we ended season two, Ephraim (Corey Stoll) and Nora (Mia Maestro) created a deadly weapon to destroy the horrific monsters that have taken over New York. Nora didn't survive to season three, but the character of Ephraim remains the driving force.
Meanwhile, Ephraim's ex-wife has kidnapped her son and holds him hostage in order to use him as bait. This scenario causes some tense scenes.
Other subplots continue, such as Gus (Miguel Gomez) struggling with the fact that his mother has become infected; she drains his blood in order to keep her alive. And the character of Justine (Samantha Mathis) becomes more and more prominent, as the tough-as-nails police commissioner tries to keep the city of New York out of harm's way. Justine is this reviewer's favorite this season.
A series of five special features complement the 3 discs on 20th Century Fox's DVD set:
"Deleted Scenes"
"Under Siege Companion Series Intro with Carlton Cuse" - series creator Cuse explains the spinoff series "The Strain - Under Siege," a series of 10 webisodes made specifically for this DVD
"The Strain: Under Siege" - a companion series that feature brief stories at two minutes long each; some of them coincide with the storylines happening in season three
"Gag Reel" - this brief featurette is worth a chuckle or two
"Vamp Boom" - a music video taken from the soundtrack of season three of "The Strain"
