Andrew Garfield Faces Twitter Backlash for Saying He's Gay 'Without the Physical Act'

Andrew Garfield is getting some online flack for comments he made about his sexuality.
The 33-year-old actor is currently playing protagonist Prior Walter, a gay man living with HIV at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, in the highly lauded London revival of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Angels in America." It was reported this week that during a panel for the play, Garfield was asked about how he prepared for the role.
"As far as I know, I am not a gay man," Garfield said. "Maybe I'll have an awakening later in my life, which I'm sure will be wonderful and I'll get to explore that part of the garden, but right now I'm secluded to my area, which is wonderful as well. I adore it, but a big concern was what right do I have to play this wonderful gay role?"
He went on to say that he watched every season of "RuPaul's Drag Race" to prepare, later adding, "I am a gay man right now just without the physical act - that's all."
But the "Social Network" star is facing an online backlash, as many people in the LGBTQ community didn't appreciate his recent remarks, People magazine reports.
Garfield has yet to respond to the backlash.
