Watch: 'Big Brother 19' Contestants Come Under Fire for Mocking Trans Women
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"Big Brother" has had its fair share of controversies over the last few years -- especially "Big Brother 15" where CBS had to put a disclaimer before airing some episodes -- and even earlier this year when contestant Cody Nickson faced backlash on Twitter for comments he made about transgender people. Nickson, along with other "BB 19" players are once again encountering a similar ire over remarks they made about trans women
Fans watching the reality show's live-feeds saw Nickson and Jason Dent in a hot tub with fellow houseguests Jessica Graf and Matt Clines. They started to discuss Season 17 contestant Audrey Middleton, who became the first trans player in "BB" history. The conversation went south, however, and Nickson and Dent can be heard making transphobic remarks.
"What the fuck does that mean -- she was a she?" Dent asked.
"It was a dude dressed up as a woman," Nickson can be heard saying.
"Okay it was a dude," Dent said. Graf then warns them they "are walking such a thin line."
Graf later correctly referred to Middleton as "she" but Dent interrupts and says, "OK, but it was a he."
"Was it a he first, or a she first?" Dent asks.
Cline laughs but says the problem is Dent referring to Middleton as "it."
In a lengthy note, Middleton, a huge "BB" fan, took to Twitter to address the houseguests comments about her and trans women.
"You are not born with emotional intelligence, you are conditioned to have it," she wrote in aprt. "The people who lack it are the one who are too afraid to try to understand what value it truly has. If you are someone who is radically opening yourself to things you will live the most purpose-filled life of all."
Nevertheless, fans were quick to call out Nickson and Dent's comments.
This isn't the first time Nickson came under fire this season for his comments about trans people. In July, "BB" fans called him out for using the slur "tranny." Middleton also weighed in on the controversy at the time, tweeting: "Cody the .0001% of the population isn't going to sympathize when you lose your job... You're going to care what we think then.."
