King Arthur - Legend of the Sword
JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.
The Arthurian Legend was never this hot! Leave it to filmmaker Guy Ritchie, the man known for his cockney mob movies and the lambaste "Sherlock Holmes" franchise, to take a stab at one of the most revered adventure mythologies and turn it on its ear. With "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," Ritchie colors one of the greatest heroic journeys with his characteristic grit and gruel, and what you get a rock solid blockbuster that works better on the small screen than it might have when it was released in theaters.
Now that the film starring the bawdy and brutishly sexy Charlie Hunnam is available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD making it a lot easier to pause and replay all the more exciting bits, and relive all the bombastic blockbuster action you never knew could come out of the Middle Ages. The all-star cast includes Eric Bana, Jude Law, and HBO's "Game of Thrones" Aidan Gillen. Ritchie tacks on all the whip-smart play that has become associated with his particular style, and applied his gruff and grime embellishing the legend of Arthur (Hunnam) and the sword Excalibur.
Charlie Hunnam imbues his Arthur with a roguishly charismatic flair, who after the murder of his father is forced out and onto the backstreets, left to carve out a path for himself. It isn't until Arthur fulfills the prophecy and frees the legendary sword Excalibur from the stone that he realizes his purpose, and challenges an uncle who has stolen away his rightful crown pitting the young man against incalculable odds - a heroic journey for the ages that till day inspires great adventure of epic proportions!
The Blu-ray is well-armed with an uncanny array of behind-the-scenes access that reveals many of the exotic locations used in the making of the film, as well as in-depth revelations on Guy Ritchie's unique perspective on Camelot and the legend of the Sword in the Stone. It took an army to rebuild the ancient castles and the cast had to perfect their sword skills to realize "The Action of King Arthur". One featurette takes an insightful look at the weapons of the era and especially the "Legend of Excalibur".
The Digital HD bonus features go inside the pre-visualization of the intense special effects needed to bring to life the film's giant snake, engineer the elaborate sets and choreograph "King Arthur" fight sequences leading up to the multi-angled "Final Battle". This isn't your father's Camelot and it's certainly not Disney's animated-lite, "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" is a blow-out action film, lite on character complexity, heavy on the testosterone and epic in its scale. If swords and sorcery cosplay are your kind of thing, this movie packs it into its tight leather pants!
