READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Rapper Tyler, the Creator gained some attention after dropping his new album "Flower Boy" in July, where he hints at being attracted to men and same-sex relationships. In a new interview this week, the controversial musician admits to having a boyfriend when he was a teenager, BuzzFeed points out.
Speaking with the Know Wave's Koopz Tunes radio show, Tyler says he had a boyfriend when he was 15 years old.
"I had a boyfriend when I was fifteen in fucking Hawthorne. If that's not open minded, I don't know what is," the rapper said.
On the his track "I Ain't Got Time," Tyler made headlines for the lyric: "Next line will have 'em like 'whoa,' I've been kissing white boys since 2004."
Despite his confessions, Tyler has come under fire in the past for using gay slurs. In 2011, GLAAD called out the musician his rap group Odd Future, which included Frank Ocean at one time, for problematic lyrics.
"Tyler and Odd Future are padding their lyrics with anti-gay slurs and dangerous, violent rhetoric," wrote Matt Kane, GLAAD's Associate Director of Entertainment Media. "But there is nothing ironically clever about hate speech, particularly when a significant part of those listening are adolescents seeking to emulate their favorite artists. It's simply irresponsible and destructive."
Tyler defended himself in a MTV interview, however, saying his gay fans "don't really take it offensive, so I don't know. If it offends you, it offends you."
