50 Years After Her Death, Gay Icon Dorothy Parker Trends on Twitter
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
"Who is Dorothy Parker?" is a question most gay people under fifty might ask. But a better question might be: "Where would gay culture be without her?"
She invented "shade." Her sometimes cruel witticisms were the precursor to the modern day drag queen's "read." Adding to her gay street cred was her work as screenwriter on the film "A Star Is Born." She loved gay men so much, she married an actor largely rumored to be gay, twice. And many LGBT historians credit the gay slang term "Friend of Dorothy" to the gaggle of gay male friends who Parker would unapologetically invite to her fashionable soires in the 1920s and 1930s.
On Tuesday, 50 years after her death, "Dorothy Parker" is a trending topic on Twitter. In observance of her birthday on August 22, 1893, the Twittersphere is abuzz with Parker's quotes -- a suitable honor considering that the acid-tongued satirist known for her short and biting quips, would have excelled at the 140 character medium.
In honor of what would have been Parker's 124th birthday, EDGE has compiled our top ten favorite tweet-able Dorothy Parker quotes.
