A Very Sordid Wedding

Kitty Drexel READ TIME: 2 MIN.

"A Very Sordid Wedding" is the follow-up movie to "Sordid Lives" the 2000 movie and the 2008 TV series. Writer/director Del Shores ("Blues For Willadean," "Southern Baptist Sissies," "Queer A Folk") reunites us with our favorite characters from Winters, Texas and introduces us to new ones. The movie will be released on October 17, 2017 as DVD/Blu-ray/streaming content via Gravitas Ventures. It premiered March 10, 2018 in Palm Springs, CA. Past tour dates and other information can be found http://www.averysordidwedding.com/.

"Sordid Wedding" picks up where Del Shores' cult-hit "Sordid Lives" ends. It's been 17 years since Peggy tripped over G.W.'s wooden legs and died. The Supreme Court has just ruled that marriage is a civil right for all; same-sex couples are free to marry whom they choose. Our favorite characters Sissy Hickey (Dale Dickey), Latrelle Williamson (Bonnie Bedelia), LaVonda (Ann Walker), Noleta (Caroline Rhea) are up to their old antics. Brother Boy (Leslie Jordan) is suffocating at an unappreciative drag bar in Longview. Meanwhile, the folk of Winters, TX are scandalized. In response to legislation, the new Southern Baptist preacher (Levi Kreis) holds an Anti-Equality Revival on the night of Peggy's 17th anniversary party. To make things even worse, a serial killer (Emerson Collins) is on the loose. It's up to Sissy, Latrelle and LaVonda to save marriage equality, the show and each other.

A la "Steel Magnolias" and other similar fare, "Sordid Wedding" is depicted in the film tradition of the good 'ole, stuck its ways South. The gossip is ripe, the drama is high and the hair is even higher. Shores campily tackles gay marriage within the context of the "religious freedom" to hate. "Sordid Wedding" might be a funny movie but its themes are serious. For example, the subplot featuring Ty (Kirk Geiger) and his husband, Kyle (T. Ashanti Mozelle) offers a loving counter-argument to the Bible-thumping bigots. They embody the kindness and polite charity that the Baptists do not. It's a middle finger to each and every Kim Davis set on restricting our freedoms.

The hijinks in this movie will appeal to those who love "Sordid Lives" as well as potential new camp fans. Brother Boy takes a trip to perform at the famous Rose Room in Dallas, TX. There he meets drag queens Cassie Nova and Krystal Summers. Alec Mapa plays a small role as a dive bar owner under attack. Whoopi Goldberg cameos as a preacher. Rue McClanahan makes a catch-it-or-you'll-miss-it post-mortem appearance as Peggy. Those who don't enjoy the acting should watch for the scantily clad Andrew Christian models serving drinks during the Drag Competition.

DVD/Blu-ray special features include bloopers, deleted scenes, 20 minutes of cast interviews on "Sordid" history and set stories. Levi Kreis' gives and on-set performance for cast and crew. There's a chat with Whoopi Goldberg. The official music video for "This Is Who We Are" from Blake McIver is also included.
