A Ghost Story

Not quite a horror movie but not really a drama, the recent independent release "A Ghost Story" features a ghost as in the movie title, but not the CGI kind found in many thrillers. Lionsgate's new release will likely do well on Blu-ray with independent movie lovers, thanks to its art-house production and quiet tone.

"A Ghost Story" also boasts recent Academy Award winner Casey Affleck and two-time nominee Rooney Mara in the lead roles. They play characters named "C" and "M" respectively, giving them anonymity throughout the film's running time. C & M are madly in love, and one can pick up on this fact thanks to a long embrace in bed between the actors; it lasts for minutes in an unbroken scene.

C, a musician, suddenly dies, but his spirit lives on in the form of a ghost -- one that isn't a special effect, but rather has talented actor Affleck with a sheet over him and eyes cut out. It's a silly sight at first but then grows to be both unsettling and beautiful.

Over the course of the film, the ghost visits his grieving girlfriend and stays in their house while new residents move in and out. "A Ghost Story" is filled with many scenes featuring pregnant pauses and virtually no dialogue. It's definitely for the patient viewer.

Along with the unique film, Lionsgate offers two featurettes on the Blu-ray disc.:

"A Ghost Story and the Inevitable Passing of Time" - this six-segment interview featurette talks about everything from the casting process to creating the ghost costumes that Casey Affleck wears

"A Composer's Story" - Daniel Hart who composed the film discusses his haunting music score that complements the movie well
