Drawn Together - The Complete Series
JC Alvarez READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Not your typical Saturday Morning Cartoons! There are just some things that have to be seen and experienced because they are just too difficult to explain. Comedy Central has always pushed the envelope, often willing to compromise good taste for the sake of bringing its audiences something new and always on edge - regardless of how many brain cells are compromised in their effort. Even cartoons aren't safe!
In the Original Series "Drawn Together - The Complete Collection," now on DVD, the sacred institutions of the animated world are brought together in the most completely unexpected fashion. Using the time-tested reality show premise, eight cartoon archetypes are picked to live their 2D lives in full color in one house and have their lives put under a microscope. Since they're not real, they don't have to be polite.
In the classic style of Ralph Bakshi's "Fritz the Cat," "Drawn Together" is very much in the vein of the '70s animated porno flick, which instantly marks this series out as an underground cult classic. "Drawn Together" takes a more contemporary approach with its satirical commentary. There's a racist Disney-inspired princess, a weirdly psychotic killer Pokemon, a super-powered caped hero, a sexually aggressive singing pussycat, and a gay elf video-game adventurer for starters.
Be warned: "Drawn Together" is not for the politically correct or the faint of heart. It goes to great lengths to poke fun at reality series like "Big Brother" and "Survivor," and charts new territory in sensitivity, like when the housemates decide help the video-game adventure come out to the world and throw him a "Gay Bash" that includes some very familiar Merry Melodies favorites. And there are no limits to what a superhero will do for some chocolate chip cookies!
How will a fairy-princess work through some of her own racist beliefs when she's confronted by the forbidden kiss of a sexy singing pussycat? It's unfortunate that her privates have been cursed, but will a kiss from prince charming really cure the princess of the monster that stirs beneath her petticoat? You'll have to watch all 36 uncensored episodes of "Drawn Together" to find out. The set also includes the movie, commentary, and interviews with the show's creators.
