Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season Eleven
Ken Tasho READ TIME: 2 MIN.
There was enough of a fan-base of horribly made movies that brought back "Mystery Science Theater 3000" back from the dead. After almost an 18-year hiatus, the cult TV show came back to Netflix last year with 14 hilarious episodes. Just when you thought there weren't any bad movies left to watch, along comes "Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season Eleven". As was the case with all of the other MST3K releases from its original run, this eleventh season comes courtesy of Shout Factory in an 8-disc Blu-ray set.
All 14 movies are extremely bad but yet charming in their own badness. What sets this season 11 apart from prior installments is the addition of new host Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray). His sarcastic wit fits perfectly into the format of MST3K, although previous hosts Joel and Mike are sorely missed. New henchmen are along for the ride this time too with Kinga (Felicia Day) and Max (Patton Oswalt). What stays the same are the robot sidekicks Tom Servo, Crow, and Gypsy. The wisecracks may not be as witty as seasons past but they still come full-throttle and out-of-nowhere in this eleventh season.
Episode highlights include:
"Reptilicus" - a ridiculously inane film about an oversized reptile that terrorizes a small town.
"The Time Travelers" - one of the cheesiest movie ever made about time travel also features some of the most wooden acting ever to grace the silver screen.
"Avalanche" - a shockingly horrible natural disaster film that has usually reliable Mia Farrow and Rock Hudson in the lead roles.
"Wizards of the Lost Kingdom" - it's a toss-up between this film and its follow-up sequel as to which one is worse....this season of MST3K includes both films.
The sole bonus feature on the eighth disc of "MST3K - Season 11" is the documentary "We Brought Back MST3K". It shows how the fans fought to bring the show back and how it all came together finally.
