Johnny Weir Comes Under Fire for Gay Olympians Tweet: 'I Never Came Out as White'
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir is getting some online heat for a tweet he made, and deleted, about being an out athlete while competing at the Winter Games, Outsports reports.
Taking to Twitter Wednesday night, Weir, who publicly came out as gay in his 2011 autobiography, lauded out figure skater Adam Rippon and skier Gus Kenworthy. Rippon made headlines earlier this month for being the first openly gay male to represent Team U.S.A. at the Winter Games. Kenworthy came out in 2015 after competing in the Sochi Olympics.
"Happy that there are representatives of the LGBTQ community competing at the Olympic Games," Weir tweeted in part. "Notably, @guskenworthy, @Adaripp & several more."
Though his message started positively, some Twitter users took issue with that rest of his tweet.
"I never 'came out' in sport because being gay was something born in me & had nothing to do with my skating. I never came out as white," he reportedly wrote.
It didn't take long for Twitter to criticize Weir, who will be a NBC figure skating analysts at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea next month.
Since getting flak, Weir took to Twitter Thursday to clear the air. In a series of tweets, he said he's "thrilled there are out representatives of the LGBTQ community" at the Olympics, adding, "It's very brave for all of us to live our truths whether on the global stage or in our own homes." He later addressed the criticism in another tweet, saying, "Many of you got upset last night when I tried to finish that thought in one tweet so I thought it needed clarification. I've got a busy day ahead so excuse me while I lotion."
