Bad Dates

Clinton Campbell READ TIME: 1 MIN.

Ah, the joys of dating ... Most people have been through it. Aside from those cultures that celebrate arranged marriage, how else are you going to meet your future soulmate (or ex-spouse)? Usually awkward, often dreadful, occasionally electrifying, but generally never dull - it is just another part of modern life.

For those that are just entering the game again after the end of a long-term relationship, the dread can be palpable. Sometimes the rules have changed (hello, Tinder). Sometimes we discover that we no longer even know what we really want.

Enter our heroine, Haley. She is the single mother/successful restaurateur that is at the center of Theresa Rebeck's comical "Bad Dates," currently playing at the Huntington Theater Company.

As portrayed by the charismatic Haneefah Wood, Haley is strong, smart, radiant and charming; plus, she has a great sense of humor. It is amazing anyone - man or woman - would not want to date her. Well, there is that slight shoe fetish...

Through director Jessica Stone's bright and fast-paced production, we get to witness all the ups and downs that anyone who has ever dated experiences. It's an honest and sometimes touching portrayal of the challenges one faces when trying to find connections in modern America.

It is an immensely enjoyable evening. And at only 90 minutes, the show flies by like an evening spent commiserating with an old friend. Because who hasn't been there?

"Bad Dates" continues through February 25 at the Huntington Avenue Theatre, 264 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA. For more details, visit the Huntington Theatre Company website.
