13 Reasons Why - Season 1

Michael Cox READ TIME: 2 MIN.

One of the most talked about television series of 2017, the award-winning "13 Reasons Why" has come to DVD. This suspenseful series, a long suicide letter, details the reasons why a smart, attractive high school girl might choose to end her life.

High school student Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) gets a mysterious package from his secret crush Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), a girl at his school who died of suicide two weeks earlier. Inside the box are seven audio tapes containing thirteen reasons why Hannah chose to end her own life.

Each reason is on one side of a double-sided tape, and each side points the finger at someone the girl has known and something they did to her. Over the course of several months, as Clay slowly listens to the tapes, he discovers more and more information about his fellow students and the ways they are implicated. But most frightening to Clay is the knowledge that his tape is coming up, and he has no idea what it will contain.

If anyone on the list of offenders breaks the chain, the entire contents of the tapes - and all of the secrets they include - will be released to the world. But Clay is taking a long time to listen to the tapes, and the other students featured on them are starting to get worried. They need to make certain that the information on those tapes doesn't get out. So they encourage Clay to stop listening, stop questioning his behavior, stop worrying about the way he treated Hannah while she was alive, move on and preserve everyone's anonymity. But Clay's conscience forces him though the entire, revelatory series.

Christian Navarro plays Tony Padilla, a gay friend of Hannah (and one of the few people who didn't sexually harass her). He orchestrates the movement of the tapes from one offender to the next, and as he does this he helps Clay come to terms with the discoveries he's making.

But is he a friend or someone not to be trusted?

Part coming of age story, part revenge tragedy, "13 Reasons Why" is a thriller that keeps you moving to the next episode, anxious to see what happens next. Even though it's filled with the archetypical characters of a teenage drama, it never seems flat or untruthful.

In addition to all 13 episodes of the first season, this DVD features over an hour of additional content including some new-to-DVD bonus material, mostly featurettes delving deeper into some of the characters.
