"Love, Simon" could have been a completely different movie. Pop star Shawn Mendes recently confessed he was going to star in the gay coming-of-age film as the titular character.

Speaking with Elvis Duran on rumors that he was asked to addition for the role of Simon Spears, a high school teenager struggling to come out as gay, Mendes said it was true but the timing didn't work out.

"Incredible, incredible movie," the 19-year-old singer said, adding, "I would have loved to [do the role] but timing didn't work out, but that would have been amazing."

He also said he saw "Love, Simon" the night before speaking with Duran and praised Nick Robinson, who plays Simon.

"Nick just did an incredible job and it was really amazing," Mendes said, later adding that he was checking his phone in the theater "every two seconds" because his new single was ready to drop.

Mendes released two new songs off his third untitled album, "In My Blood" and "Lost in Japan." Listen to those two songs below and watch his interview with Duran, also below.
