Watch: Singer Shawn Mendes Talks About Working with Trans Producer Teddy Geiger

Gearing up for his new album, pop singer Shawn Mendes recently spoke about the project, opening up about working with producer Teddy Geiger, who came out as transgender last year.

The two have worked in the past, with Geiger helping Mendes with hits "Stitches," "Mercy," and "There's Nothing Holding' Me Back." Mendes has also enlisted Geiger for his upcoming LP.

Last year Geiger took to Instagram to reveal she is transitioning and will be using she/her pronouns going forward, though she is still using her birth name for now.

Speaking with Beats 1's Zane Lowe, Mendes said it took some time to adjust to Geiger's transition but that he couldn't be happier for her, Billboard points out.

"I'm so grateful to be going through this process with her because I'm learning so much from it," he said, adding that not many producers understand him like Geiger.

"If that was any other person it was like my head's exploding, I'm getting out of this room," the singer added. "The fact that she was able to take everything I was saying and just digest it all and make it all me, is genius. "

Mendes also talked about the first time he referred to Geiger with female pronouns without thinking twice about it. He said the look on her face when it happened was incredibly touching.

"I wish everyone could experience this, because if they did, there would be no questions," he said. "There would be no 'I don't get it,' no confusion about the process."

Mendes has released two singles off his new album: "In My Blood" and "Lost in Japan." Geiger co-wrote and co-produced the former and co-wrote the latter track.
