Netflix Cancels Queer Teen Series 'Everything Sucks!'
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Indeed, everything does suck.
Netflix announced Tuesday it was pulling the plug on its queer teen dramedy, the '90s-set "Everything Sucks!" after just one season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Created by Ben York Jones ("Like Crazy") and Michael Mohan, "Everything Sucks!" followed a group of high school teenagers living in the town of Boring, Oregon in 1996. The show starred Peyton Kennedy, Jahi Winston, Patch Darragh, Claudine Mboligikpelani Nako, Sydney Sweeney, Elijah Stevenson, Quinn Liebling, and Rio Mangini.
Kennedy played Kate Messner, who, throughout the first season, came to terms with being lesbian, coming out to her friend Luke (Winston), who had a crush on her. THR writes "Everything Sucks!" "made waves within the LGBT community but struggled to cut through to mass appeal despite a small group of loyal and vocal followers. The show was particularly praised for its lesbian representation..."
All 10 episodes of "Everything Sucks!" debuted on Netflix on Feb. 16. One of the show's executive producers, Jeff Pinker, released a statement to THR about the cancelation.
"We're super proud of the show we made - and very proud that it found an audience of very passionate fans, for many of whom it became an important personal touchstone: either reflecting their current life, or an echo of their own teenage years," he said. "We are grateful to Netflix for the opportunity, but are very disheartened we won't be continuing to tell these stories."
