'Stuart Little' (and his Adventures) Come to Wheelock Family Theatre
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Following highly successful runs of "In the Heights" and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" in its 2017-18 season, Wheelock Family Theatre proudly presents "Stuart Little," the classic tale of a mouse born into a human family.
"Stuart Little" opens on Friday, April 13, with 15 performances over five weekends, four spring vacation week matinees, and 12 weekday student matinees through Mother's Day, May 13.
"Stuart Little" is Wheelock Family Theatre's third production of an E.B. White story in consecutive seasons ("The Trumpet of the Swan," 2015-16 and "Charlotte's Web," 2016-17). "White's work is beloved by children of all ages, and Wheelock Family Theatre's production will engage and enchant people of all ages, colors, and sizes," said Linda Chin, Wheelock Family Theatre's Producing Artistic Director.
"Stuart Little" continues Wheelock Family Theatre's 37-year old tradition of creating accessible, professional theatre with inter-generational, multi-cultural casts for families and communities to experience together. Wheelock Family Theatre is affiliated with Actors' Equity Association, and the 43-member ensemble includes 23 youth actors sharing the stage with professional adult actors. Many of the adult and youth actors are making their professional debuts, and Wheelock Family Theatre's audiences include long-time theatre-goers and people experiencing the magic of live theatre for the first time.
Directed by Nick Vargas (who helmed Wheelock Family Theatre's productions of "Year with Frog and Toad" and "Seussical" at the Boston Children's Museum), "Stuart Little" represents story theatre at its best: The actors play human and animal characters, many in multiple roles as the story unfolds; the audience experiences the story from the perspective of being six feet, three feet, or two inches tall; the actors-musicians-dancers work as an ensemble to carry the action forward (adaptation by Joseph Robinette; original compositions by Todd Gordon, choreography by Joy Clark). The production culminates with an ending created by the company that will surprise and delight.
Performances are Fridays at 7:30pm (except 4/20) and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. April Vacation Week 1pm matinees are scheduled for Tuesday the 17th through Friday the 20th. All performances are open captioned. Performances on Sunday, May 6 and Friday, May 11, will be ASL-interpreted and audio-described.
