Watch: 'Glee' Star Kevin McHale Officially Comes Out as Gay, Regrets Ariana Grande Tweet
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Fans have been speculating "Glee" star Kevin McHale's sexuality for awhile now. It started when the actor posted photos of himself with what appeared to be a mystery man. Later, he sort-of came out when he tweeted about Ariana Grande's latest single "No Tears Left to Cry," saying the song was "gayer than me."
McHale, 29, confirmed he is gay in a Facebook Live interview with Marc Malkin. He said he felt he "wasn't obviously shouting it from the mountaintops" that he is gay, but said if someone "was a big fan and following everything I was doing [online], like the people I interact with on Twitter on a daily basis, I think there was zero surprise. People knew."
He also confirmed he's dating actor Austin McKenzie, saying they've been together for just over a year and a half and that they're "very happy."
He added that though he may not be openly gay, he did his part to support LGBTQ rights.
"The organizations I've been supporting and all that sort of work has been apparent, at least to me," the actor told Malkin. "I've always supported LGBT organizations and things like that because I felt like I had a vested interest in this where I wanted to help out."
McHale also addressed his Grande tweet, saying he "honestly feel[s] bad about it because that song is about a lot more."
"That song is about something really horrible and tragic and something she went through and dealt with beyond anybody's imaginable expectations," he added. "I just made this passing joke about it and then I was like this is sort of disrespectful to the song and subject matter she was talking about."
He also talked about fans' reaction to his coming out.
"Twenty-four hours goes by, and all of a sudden I get a barrage of tweets and people being like, 'Oh my god, congrats! Welcome!' I'm like, 'What happened? I was freaking out," he told Malkin. "I was like, something happened that I do not know about. And then I saw that it was the tweet.
"People were like, 'Oh, you just came out.' I was like, did I?" he added. "I was like, would anyone choose to come out in a tweet about an Ariana Grande song?"
