In New Interview, Singer Troye Sivan Explains Why He Doesn't Want to be a Gay Icon
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Out singer Troye Sivan has been earning buzz for his latest batch of singles off his upcoming sophomore album "Bloom." He's also been praised for being upfront about his sexuality and a queer artist, using male pronouns in his music and having his latest single "Bloom" being described as "an anthem for power bottoms." In an in-depth New York Times profile piece, the newspaper called Sivan a "new kind of pop star: here queer and used to it."
Nevertheless, in a new interview with Another Man magazine, Sivan, 22, talked about coming out, his career and not wanting to identify as a gay icon.
"With people like Hayley Kiyoko and Brockhampton, we're starting to get, finally, a diverse group of different LGBTQ perspectives," the singer said. "That's why I politely don't want to take on that 'gay icon' thing."
He went on to say that he's "one voice of so many that are missing."
"...[S]o I'm just trying to tell my story, and right now I'm having so much fun in my life, I feel confident, I'm just enjoying myself, and so that was really important to me to express," Sivan told Another Man.
He went on to add that he doesn't feel like he "represent[s] everybody because I'm extraordinary lucky."
"And I don't. I just don't represent everybody, because I'm extraordinarily lucky," he said. "I come from a middle-class white family in Australia, and all of my dreams have come true by 22. I had the easiest coming out in the world... I don't ever want to take that on really, because there are plenty of other people who need to be heard first."
Elsewhere in the interview, Sivan opens up about his coming out experience, performing on "Saturday Night Live," romcoms, and more.
