Talking with Paige Davis :: Making Magic with Mame

Steve Duffy READ TIME: 6 MIN.

Multi-Emmy nominee Paige Davis, who is best known for hosting the design reality show "Trading Spaces," which is currently enjoying a well-received reboot on TLC. But she will soon be returning to the stage, her first love, to star as Mame Dennis in a new production of the Jerry Herman musical at the North Shore Music Theatre from June 5 - 17. (For more information, .

There isn't likely a better musical choice for Pride Month than this 1966 hit, adapted from the novel, play, and film that introduced Patrick Dennis's outrageous aunt into pop culture. Mame Dennis remains one of the most loved icons of gay culture, largely because of her big heart, unconventional lifestyle, and her liberal advocacy when facing the bigots of her time. Her mantra - "Life is a banquet, and most poor sons-of-bitches are starving to death!" - was something that many gays have embraced in the 60-years since Dennis' novel was published.

In playing the role, Davis joins an elite group of actresses' target='_blank'> Angela Lansbury (who was electrifying in the original production), Lucille Ball (not so electrifying on film), Ginger Rogers in London, and Elaine Stritch on the road. Talk of a new film version - featuring either Cher or Barbra Streisand - have circulated for years.
Nor has Davis been a stranger to the stage over her career, both in New York and elsewhere. During the initial run of "Trading Spaces," Davis starred as Roxie Hart in the long-running revival of "Chicago" on Broadway. She toured as Babette in the first national tour of "Beauty and the Beast," and in 2007 she took the lead role of Charity Hope in the national tour of "Sweet Charity," replacing Molly Ringwald. In 2008 she was featured in the British comedy "Boeing-Boeing" during its recent, highly lauded revival, and, more recently, returned to "Chicago" as Roxie Hart again.

Besides these television and theater credits, Ms. Davis is also the author of the New York Times best-selling book, "Paige by Paige, A Year of Trading Spaces."

"I am so happy to have Paige Davis on board to bring this legendary character to life. I know her natural charm, warmth, and wit will lead our audiences in sharing Mame's enthusiasm for life," said Bill Hanney, NSMT owner and producer.

EDGE spoke to Ms. Davis recently about all things Mame, as well as the reboot of "Trading Spaces."

Favorite Mame

EDGE: How did you get attached to the show?

Paige Davis I believe it is because of the NSMT casting director. He worked with a very good friend of mine and when they were looking, he called and asked if I would be a good fit for the role of Mame. I am so glad that they thought of me.

EDGE: What do you think of the character of Mame? How would you describe her?

Paige Davis She is larger than life. She lives life to the fullest. I love that she not only lives life, but she chooses life no matter what her circumstances are. It is how you get back up when you're knocked down that is what makes you the person you are.

EDGE: Since Mame is a larger than life character, is it difficult to portray her on stage?

Paige Davis I have been told by many friends that I am the Mame in their life. I am always the one hosting parties or taking in wayward souls. I always get back up when I am knocked down. Like Mame, I always choose life and love. I do have a great relationship with my aunt, so I do understand the power of that type of relationship. Also, because I don't have any children of my own, my nephews and nieces bring me joy like the relationship that Mame and Patrick have.

EDGE: Do you have a favorite moment in the show?

Paige Davis Oh my gosh! So many! I love when I say to Agnes Gooch, "Don't be a silly goose." I love the word goose. It just strikes me funny.

EDGE: Favorite Mame: Lucille Ball, Rosalind Russell, or Angela Lansbury?

Paige Davis Believe it or not, I have not seen the stage show or the movie. Now with the role at my feet, I won't watch it until after. If I had to pick one, it would be Angela. I have listened to the original cast recording and it is quite a beautiful thing to hear her as Mame.

Her Vera Charles

EDGE: Finish the line "Life is a banquet....."

Paige Davis my version of the quote is "and you should eat up!!!!!"

EDGE: Who is the Vera Charles in your life?

Paige Davis Every gay bestie who has come and gone in my life. When it was announced that I got the role, all my gay friends sent me a text saying, "I want to be the queen in your life." My Vera is my best friend, Moulton Stewart. He is grand, fun, and honest. The Vera in your life should be the most honest person in your life. Someone who will tell you the truth no matter what.

EDGE: Why do you think Auntie Mame has resonated with generations of gay men?

Paige Davis She is unapologetic. She is forward-thinking. She is accepting. She is greater than tolerance. She is embracing. She is everything we need others to be.

EDGE: What life lesson can we all learn from Auntie Mame?

Paige Davis Don't let life get you down. Always preserve. Live your life to fullest, you only have one. Most importantly don't judge others.

EDGE: How does it feel being back as the host on the reboot of TLC's "Trading Spaces?"

Paige Davis Great! It is currently airing on Saturday nights. It's been a wonderful experience. Being on the show again is like riding a bike. It is great to know that the relationship we have as a cast is not a fluke. We really do make magic together.

OUT AT THE NORTH SHORE: An evening for the LGBTQ Community including a post-show reception with the cast at The Backstage Bistro will be on Thursday, June 14th.
