Double Lover
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Prolific French filmmaker Franois Ozon returns with an adaptation of a Joyce Carol Oates novel that he stylishly makes his own. Mirrors, twins, and a troubled relationship between reality and hallucination mark out "Double Lover" as a sexy thriller to bring home.
When Chlo (Marine Vacth) falls for her handsome therapist, Paul (Jrmie Renier), the two end their therapy sessions and move in together. They share a comfortable, slightly rumpled life - until, that is, Chlo catches sight of Paul across town, looking more sharp than usual, and starts wondering what he's up to.
It turns out that Paul has a twin brother, Louis - also a therapist - from whom he is estranged. Curious (and still in need of therapy), Chlo secretly books appointments with Louis, only to find that his approach to mental health is rougher than Paul's... and he's not afraid to cross all sorts of boundaries.
But the most blurred boundary of all is that between fact and fantasy; as Chlo begins looking into the brothers' past, she starts finding clues that point to terrible secrets and terrible crimes... or is she letting her imagination run wild?
Ozon's ever-inventive cinematic techniques give the twisty plot extra dimensions and create a palpable sense of uneasy electricity. This Cohen Media Blu-ray offers one special feature, aside from the trailer, which is a "Conversation from the Quad" in which Ozon and Vacth speak with Columbia film professor Richard Pea about the movie. The pair are effortlessly charming, with the director offering intriguing tidbits about his working methods and detailing the journey Oates' book took from page to screen. It's a diverting and enjoyable feature that, at less than 20 minutes, doesn't outstay its welcome.
Ozon and Vacth worked on one previous film together, and the director worked with Renier on two previous films. They make a potent and powerful partnership; here's hoping the three get back in front of and behind the camera in short order.
