Jude Law Explains Why Dumbledore Being Gay Won't be Mentioned 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel
READ TIME: 1 MIN.
Jude Law is explaining why the sexuality of the "Harry Potter" character Dumbledore won't be addressed in the "Fantastic Beasts" sequel.
Earlier this year, some fans grew upset when director David Yates said the wizard, played by Law, won't be "explicitly" gay in the upcoming movie "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald." The 45-year-old actor provided more information about the issue when speaking with Entrainment Weekly this week.
"Jo Rowling revealed some years back that Dumbledore was gay," Law said of "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling. "That was a question I actually asked Jo and she said, 'Yes, he's gay.'
"But as with humans, your sexuality doesn't necessarily define you; he's multifaceted," he told EW. "I suppose the question is: How is Dumbledore's sexuality depicted in this film?"
Law said Dumbledore being gay isn't in the new movie, however.
"What you got to remember this is only the second 'Fantastic Beasts' film in a series and what's brilliant about Jo's writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time," he said. "You're just getting to know Albus in this film, and there's obviously a lot more to come."
Though Rowling announced Dumbledore is gay, it was never explicit in any of the "Harry Potter" films or books.
"We learn a little about [Dumbledore's] past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally which I'm excited to reveal," Law told EW. "But we're not going to reveal everything all at once."
"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" hits theaters on Nov. 16.
